Continental Outdoor Media hosted a smoking hot Potjie Cook-off for their clients at Chartwell Manor on Thursday 12 July 2013. Esteemed judges, Sir Errol Gobey, owner and head chef of award winning Bellgables Country Restaurant, Howard Fox, Head of Marketing at GIBS and Bazil Lauryssen CEO of Continental Outdoor Media, tasted the meticulously presented potjie offerings and selected winners from the 10 participating media agency teams. Teams were hard pressed to impress Sir Errol Gobey, who was not only knighted by the queen, but Bellgables was selected as one of the top 30 restaurants by Moet & Chandon.
OMD won first prize and each member of their team received a weekend away at Sun City for themselves and their partners valued at R2000 per person per night. The second runners-up, Scope Marketing won a dinner for each team member and a partner at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton. Mediashop came in third and won a breakfast at Fournos for each member of their team and their partners. The ‘Potjie Police’ who arrived in costume, Carat/Posterscope, won the spirit award which was also a breakfast at Fournos for each team member plus a partner.
The competition was fiery as the afternoon faded into evening, with media agency teams building fires, competing in challenges to collect spices and vegetables to take back to their rustic outdoor cooking stations - that came stocked with some firewood, meat, onions and oil. No holds were barred as teams competed to prepare the most delectable potjie. All efforts were rewarded in the eating of the piping potjie dinner under a chandelier adorned thatch boma. The event was a gastronomical success.
